Perfecting The "Smokey Eye"

This whole Doppleganger (celebrity look alike) week on Facebook has gotten me thinking about my lack of make-up application skills.

See, she knows how to put on makeup (or at least her stylist does). I've been working diligently with my recently purchased eye liner smudge brush trying to create that perfect "smokey eye" look. In the beginning I just ended up looking like I got punched in the face, but I'm determined. Glamour Magazine tells me a woman in her 30's "must perfect the smokey eye".

Well, if I must, I must. I wonder if Glamour realizes that I have a few other musts on my to-do list as well (like scraping the sludge off from under the high chair tray or working on the tornado tube I'm making for my five year old from two 2 liter soda bottles. I mean these are the real musts for a woman in her 30's, right?) I don't want to fall behind. I HAVE to have smokey eyes.

It's so frustrating. I am not good at makeup (or hair). I like to be good at things. I'm a little competitive as you know. Do you think I'd get the same effect if I just slammed my face into the mirror each morning?? It would take a lot less time and save money on smudge brushes, eye shadow and mascara.....not to mention make up remover.

I do think I'm getting better. It's funny though, to me, when I put this much eye make-up on I feel funny leaving the house. I feel like it's just SO MUCH! But when I look at the photo it does not look as thick or as dark as it does in my mind. Compared to the photos on the pages of Glamour (and most of the photos I found of Julia Stiles), this look is "natural". I can't even imagine how much makeup they put on before those photo shoots. They must need turpentine to remove it.

Seriously, any suggestions? Have any of you perfected your "smokey eye" yet? (I sort of want to try false eyelashes.. but I'm chicken.) And how the heck do I get rid of the dark circles under my eyes? (Besides getting more sleep..that is not possible right now)

If someone else would "make me look natural" every day I wouldn't have a problem with it but if I have to learn how to do it on my own...simply not going to happen.

Your eye does look very nice Suz...

Ha ha! My thoughts about smokey eyes...I thought I had it perfected with the under-eye shadows. Thought THAT was the look! Anyways, have fun striving for perfection! Love your blog...it's the first time I've commented.

It looks lovely! I recently updated my make up collection. I got one of those made for your color eyes with different shades to help bring out the color of your eye. I am adjusting to having that much make up on too!

I found a brilliant site on YouTube, by a woman called Lauren Luke.
Her accent is a bit hard to understand, but she shows you how to do all of your make-up perfectly...even false eye-lashes!
Try looking at her tutorials for different looks.Hope this can help you get the smokey eyes that you are looking for!
She even does her own range of make-up and has a few book out too!

ooh! I think that looks GREAT! I have no skill with the smokey eye. Unless it's smokey the bear. And then I just look furry.

I think you did a great job! I am terrible at hair and make-up too...I try to pretend I'm not terrible at it, but I am. :)

This is so funny b/c after watching like 5 episodes of What Not to Wear over the weekend and seeing Carmendie's talent I want to be able to do this too. I attempted it but I need new shadow or something. Or wait, maybe I just need Carmendie...

I think you did a great job and WOAH, you do look like Julia!

I didn't even know about this look-alike thing on facebook. I'm so clueless. And yeah, i've got no advice on either makeup or dark circles...I struggle with these same issues :)

You're gorgeous by the way, and I really mean that.

I am horrible at eye makeup and would never be able to pull this off. Sigh. And I've not got the patience to watch a video or read through all these tutorials that make no sense to me....
